Diversionary Activity

I happened upon a blog recently called Write About Now and discovered a wealth of Christian authors. I have been keeping my brain occupied by beefing up my "to be borrowed" roster in my online library account. It seems the ones I wanted to tackle first are not readily available at my local branch, so I had to log my request for them to be transferred over. Ah, well, technology is a wonderful thing (when it works), so I will just need to wait a couple of days until I receive the magical email informing me that my selections are ready to be picked up. Now back to finding more titles to add to my wish list...sure hoping they don't have a limit on how many books I can log....

Coming Soon!

LOCAL AUTHOR RELEASES NEW SUSPENSE NOVEL
THE KEEPER OF DARKNESS
Saratoga, New York – December 8, 2008 -- Local author, Ladean Warner, based her new suspense novel, The Keeper of Darkness in familiar territory, Saratoga County. Using the backdrop of Saratoga and the end of track season, Ladean weaves a story born out of her love of suspense novels.

In The Keeper of Darkness, just outside of Saratoga Springs in a small town, two women are missing. Several years ago, four women disappeared in the same way, but Jake Peterson solved those cases and a man was convicted of their murders. Now, Jake just returned to Granelle as the new associate pastor for a small church. On the night that the senior pastor is hospitalized, Jake’s old boss asks him to return to his job as a detective and take over the case from his ex-partner/ex-fiancée, Meg Riley, since there are similarities to the solved cases.

As Jake is torn with his desire to help the police force and his commitment to the church, he hears that Meg is following a strange theory tied to animal hairs at the crime scenes. People are talking about her and the captain is questioning her ability to handle the case. As Jake struggles to meet the needs of the church, a ten-year old boy in his congregation is reported missing by his parents. As Jake finds himself drawn into the investigation, he realizes that Meg may be the latest victim.

Ladean grew up in northern New Jersey. After moving to New York, she attended Empire State College while raising her small children, obtaining her MBA in 2007. In addition to writing, Ladean works as a finance director for a girls’ school, enjoys spending time with her family, is involved in her local church, is an avid reader, and enjoys other creative pursuits.

The novel has been released by Publish America, Frederick, Maryland, and will be available at bookstores nationwide. Autographed copies of The Keeper of Darkness are available for sale only at http://ladeanwarner.com. For more information, members of the press can contact the author at ladean@ladeanwarner.

My Preoccupation Grows...

...with the book "House of Wolves".

A couple of posts ago I raved about getting an advanced copy of the book. Well, I read it rather quickly, because the author's style lends itself to a quick and enjoyable read plus I've been known to read freakishly fast - according to my husband. Anyway, the other day, I noticed on Facebook that one of the author's newest friends was August Adams - the main character in the book. "Brilliant marketing idea", I think to myself and immediately sent off a friend request to the fictional being - - yeah, I know, slightly deranged behavior on my part, but hey, I plead "mental-pause". Anyway, I get notification that my request has been granted and I see in the status line that August has a blog at http://augustadams.wordpress.com/. Of course I have to go check it out. I find out his birthday is the same as my sisters....(note to self: must mail her birthday card tomorrow, seeing as her birthday was LAST Wednesday).

I did call her to wish her a "Happy Birthday" even though she says she stopped counting them. I had to confess that her card was going to be late (like she didn't already know that all by herself). I told her that both her and my nephew's cards would get there before the end of the month AND that I wouldn't post pictures here on my blog until they got a chance to see them first.
I've rationalized that a sneak peek inside Ryan's card wouldn't be giving the whole thing away... so feast your eyes on this:

There was no promises made about sharing photos of the custom wrapping paper for the kid's gifty (hope he likes what's inside).
Once I know they have received their belated greetings, I will post more pics. Until then....

OMG!

Okay, so yesterday, I go zooming off to work (running just a tad later than I wanted to be) and I noticed that we had a plastic grocery bag hanging from our mailbox - which is un-strategically located three houses down with a bunch of others (that's just how we roll out here in the wilds of Galway). ANYWAY, I whip out my new "Captain Kirk phone" and hit the speed dial for my home phone. Dear sweet hubby must have been outside and didn't pick up - so I leave a message to tell him the news - there was a package too big for our mailbox hanging there patiently waiting for us to collect it. I continue on to work not giving it another thought - after all, it was probably just one of the models that Mike won off of eBay

Fast forward to 10:30 pm. I'm moments away from home and think to myself - "pull over and check the mail". As I approach, I see the bag forlornly still hanging from our box. I retrieve it along with various "love letters" from our creditors and bits of junk mail. I pull into the driveway and start gathering my stuff. On the porch is another box - "how many models does one man need?" I wonder and then realize I really have no room to get irritated by the behavior because I'm the same way with my crafting supplies - so I quickly nip that emotion in the bud.

I take my stuff upstairs to find my sweetie on the computer messing with photos the models he has meticulously constructed (they are really quite impressive and I've been encouraging him to start up a Facebook or blog to share his creations with anyone who would care to enjoy the fruits of his hobby - he just smiles and continues to explain how he customized his Army jeep to make it more realistic). ANYWAY, I hand over the packages and start unloading my other stuff I schlepped upstairs. I am mindlessly sharing the events of my day as he practically chews open the first box. "Cool" he says "they are here already". He had won an eBay auction for four sets of model wheels for the price of what one set sells for in the stores. He starts on the grocery bag and finds that it's not one, not two, but three bags protecting the one from the mail box. When he finally gets to the actual box he says, "Honey, this one is for you." I see the Nashville return address and the name "Matt Bronleewe" and I think I let out a little scream of delight. My dear sweet husband is perplexed (he has no idea who this guy is) and a little alarmed as I started searching the room for a sharp object to liberate the treasure that I am certain lays inside. He handed me his Exacto knife and gently (but firmly) asked that I return it after I sliced through the tape and before I stabbed myself when trying to open the box.

I lifted the top to see the largest sticker I've seen in a long time - it is the logo of a Facebook group which Matt started - "The Unsecret Society". Lovingly wrapped in newsprint I find a copy of Matt's new book "House of Wolves" (signed), an envelope with signed book plates and bookmarks to promote the book, and a letter entitled "Operation: Wolfpack" explaining my "very unsecret mission". By now, I find myself laughing maniacally - and my husband is becoming more alarmed. I explain this is the guy who wrote "Illuminated" (the book I devoured in ten hours) and that this is the sequel. This seems to ease his mind - but now he has noticed that I am hugging the book as I am explaining and I can tell he wants to ask "Did you take your pills today?"

Sadly, I have not started reading this new edition to my library - Project Runway's second showing was about to start and by the time it was over - I was way too tired to keep my eyes open. So I will just need to carry it with me today with the hopes of a few stolen moments to discover August Adam's newest adventure.

A Must Read: Illuminated by Matt Bronleewe

On Thursday I get an email from one of my sisters. It was a forwarded message from Emily, her daughter-in-law, about some exciting news: she and her husband (my nephew) Josh wrote a screenplay based on Emily's brother's recently published book "Illuminated". Included in the email is a link for purchasing the book online. The reviews hooked me right away. Being a creature driven by immediate gratification, I checked to see if my local Borders store had the puppy on the shelf (after all, I had this 20% coupon burning a hole in my purse), so it was a no-brainer that this purchase needed to be made. I used my internet savvy to place to book on hold.

Friday I had a lunch date with a friend who works strategically down the street from the Borders where my new purchase was patiently waiting for me. After Barb and I finish our yummy comfort food lunch at our favorite downtown diner, we strolled up the street to rescue my new treasure. Since it is a new release, it is placed prominently in the front of the store. Anxiously, I pick up a copy and read the back cover synopsis. I am overcome with a desire to find a comfy chair, a cup (no pot) of coffee and start tearing into the book right then and there in the store. Unfortunately, such was not to be. I recently started a new job (which I loooove) and I thought it would be the ultimate in tacky to call in on the first Friday of my new employ. {by the way, the gal I work with and my new boss both want to read it too - they are both fans of the genre)

Anyway, I didn't get to start reading until about 8:30 Saturday morning. I took it along with me on our day of errands. I was hooked by page seven. My husband kept trying to have a conversation with me and I just kept answering "uh hunh" until he finally gave up. Our first stop was at the camper place where my hubby's new cap needed to be adjusted. The quick work to of the installer put us ahead of schedule for our eye doctors appointment - but that just played into my "secret evil plan" - I had my new exciting book to read. My downfall was when the eye doctor had to dilate my eyes. I was unable to focus properly for several hours (which really made our shopping stops loads of fun - NOT!) By the time we got home from all our running around, my eyes were no longer ultra-sensitive to light and resumed their normal operation, at which point, I poured myself a glass of iced tea and took up station in my recliner to devour this book.

I will not give away any of the plot (I hate when people do that!) but I must say, if you enjoy a fast-paced historically based-story, you've GOT to read this one. And I agree with Emily & Josh, this would make one dynamite movie!
